As winter sets in, so do the seasonal illnesses that can cause persistent coughs. While most coughs are harmless and resolve on their own, others may signal a more serious condition that requires medical attention. Dr. Jessica Best, Medical Director at Ally Medical ER, explains the red-flag symptoms of a persistent cough and when it’s time to visit an emergency room.

Early evaluation can make all the difference when it comes to respiratory health.
Common Causes of Persistent Coughs
Respiratory Infections: Viral infections like the flu, RSV, and bronchitis can cause lingering coughs that may last for weeks. Dr. Best notes that while many respiratory infections are viral and self-limiting, complications such as secondary bacterial infections can develop. If a cough persists beyond 10 days, or if new symptoms like fever or shortness of breath arise, seek medical care.
Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a serious lung infection that often begins with flu-like symptoms but worsens over time. A cough accompanied by chest pain, difficulty breathing, and a high fever may indicate pneumonia.
Asthma or COPD Exacerbations: Cold weather can trigger asthma attacks or exacerbate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Persistent coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing should never be ignored in patients with these conditions.
Red-Flag Symptoms to Watch For
According to Dr. Best, you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
Chest pain, especially if it worsens with deep breathing or coughing.
A high fever lasting more than three days.
Coughing up blood or thick green/yellow mucus.
Persistent cough lasting longer than three weeks.
