5 Common Myths About Free-Standing Emergency Rooms Debunked

When you or a loved one needs emergency care, where you go matters. But many people still hesitate to visit a Free-Standing Emergency Room (FSER) due to outdated assumptions or misinformation.

Let’s set the record straight by tackling five of the most common myths and the facts that debunk them.

Myth #1: “They are not a real ER.”

Truth: Free-Standing Emergency Rooms are licensed by the state and fully equipped to handle the same emergencies as hospital-based ERs. They are staffed by board-certified physicians and ER-trained nurses, and they offer advanced diagnostics, including CT scans, X-rays, ultrasounds, labs and IV medications.

Myth #2: “They can’t treat serious conditions.”

Truth: FSERs handle serious, life-threatening emergencies every day. This includes chest pain and strokes to severe injuries, asthma attacks and infections. If a patient requires hospital admission, FSERs coordinate direct transfers without delay.

Myth #3: “They cost way more than a hospital ER.”

Truth:  In Texas, by law, insurance companies must process all emergency room claims—whether from a hospital ER or a freestanding ER—at in-network rates, even if the ER itself is out-of-network. At Ally Medical Emergency Room, we also offer financial assistance programs like our Care Relief Program to eligible patients to help reduce or even eliminate out-of-pocket costs. You’ll never pay more just because it’s a freestanding ER.

Myth #4: “They’re just glorified urgent care clinics.”

Truth: Urgent care centers are a great option for minor illnesses and injuries, but they often don’t have advanced imaging or emergency-trained staff on-site. Freestanding ERs, on the other hand, are equipped for true emergencies and operate 24/7, with board-certified ER physicians available around the clock—not just general practitioners.

Myth #5: “If it’s not connected to a hospital, it’s not safe.”

Truth: FSERs follow strict safety protocols and are often faster and more personalized than busy hospital ERs. Patients receive immediate, one-on-one care without the long wait times common in large hospital systems.

The Bottom Line

Free-Standing ERs provide high-quality emergency care in a convenient, fast, and safe environment. Don’t let myths stop you from getting the care you need. At Ally Medical ER, we’re available 24/7 to treat serious conditions with compassion, expertise, and minimal wait.
