Coughs, Colds, and Emergency Room Visits: What’s Worth a Trip?

No one likes a runny nose, sneezing, or a scratchy throat. Unfortunately, coughs and colds are a normal part of life, and they are not going anywhere.

With the common cold causing a wide range of symptoms, how do you know when a simple cold has become something more serious? Here’s how to tell when you can treat symptoms at home and when it’s time to head to the Emergency Room.

When It’s Just a Cold

Most colds are mild and manageable at home. Typical symptoms include:

  • Runny or stuffy nose

  • Sneezing

  • Sore throat

  • Mild cough

  • Low-grade fever or fatigue

Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications can usually help your body fight off the virus in a few days to a week.

When to See a Doctor

Schedule a doctor’s visit if symptoms last more than 10 days, worsen after initial improvement, or include:

  • Sinus pain or pressure

  • Ear pain

  • Persistent cough or chest tightness

  • Fever that lasts more than 3 days

When to Go to the ER

Seek emergency care if you or someone in your family experiences:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

  • High fever (over 104°F) or fever with chills and confusion

  • Blue lips or face

  • Wheezing or severe chest pain

  • Vomiting or signs of dehydration

  • Coughing up blood

Young children and older adults are more vulnerable to complications from respiratory infections. If they’re struggling to breathe, refusing fluids, or seem unusually tired or unresponsive, it’s time to go to your nearest Ally Medical ER
